Tying flies Spring Break trip to Bennett Spring and Maramec Spring in MO?
Need a list of good flies to tie for the trip in the first week of April. Starting early so I can purchase the materials from Bass Pro with the Gift Cards I received for gifts this holiday. Most detailed answer wins!
The best thing to do is maybe contact a flyshop or two in the area and ask them -- they'll have detailed and intimate knowledge of what will work in which areas.
If you're going in cold, then it's best to be safe and keep your selection general. Just tie up a generic batch of all-purpose flies and maybe you can take your tying gear and tie up flies that you learn about on site.
Nymphs: In April the nymph fishing should be pretty good. I'd tie up some Hare's Ear Nymphs, Pheasant Tails, and Prince Nymphs (other attractor nymphs if you know how to tie them) in sizes 14 and down to maybe 18. Tie a few beadhead varieties of each. Also tie up some scuds in a few colors. Tie up some Woolly Buggers sizes 10 and down to maybe 14 in black, olive, maybe black/green with some flash.
There may be a stonefly hatch that you can fish around this time, but you'd need some local intel to know the particulars. Stonefly hatches can be dramatic to fish, so you don't want to miss one if you can help it.
Dries: Tie some all-purpose mayfly and midge patterns. BWO, PMD, and Parachute Adams sizes 14 down to as small as you can get them -- 22? Tie other mayfly patterns if you have a preference. Take some Griffith's Gnats sizes 18 through 20 at least. If you've got a good mosquito pattern, use that. Seems like April will be a little early for a caddisfly, but you really should never be without caddis patterns, so tie up some Elk Hair Caddis and some X-Caddis in sizes 12 down to 16. Probably too early for terrestrials, but you never know -- small hoppers coming out at that time? Ants?
Streamers: Tie up a few sizes and colors of Muddler or Clouser Minnows. Do some brown, olive, and black in sizes 8 down to 12-ish(?). You're trying to imitate minnows, newly hatched fry, and young-of-year fish.
